How it Works

Darwin’s is a raw, natural pet food service that will deliver meals tailored to your dogs and cats. The company is known for its high-quality ingredients, commitment to excellence, and its vast library of research and information. To get started with Darwin’s, you fill out a short 7-question form, so Darwin’s can get to know your pet better. Questions include which type of animal your pet is, their breed, weight, life stage, and any known allergies. You can also add multiple pets to your Darwin’s account.

Now it’s time to order the food. Darwin’s has a short questionnaire to help pet parents figure out the best amount and meal types for their pets. You’ll put in your info, answer some questions, and Darwin’s will tell you which meal plan is best for you. Add payment and delivery info, and you’re ready to roll. Darwin’s has a convenient auto-shipment option that lets you set and forget, so your pet doesn’t run out of food because you forgot to place the order.

What’s cool about this company is the amount of research that has gone into the product. We’ll talk about it more below, but when you put in your order, realize you’re getting pet food based on serious research and expert veterinary nutritional recommendations. They’re not pulling stuff out of hats (which is cruel to animals, so Darwin’s wouldn’t do that anyway!).

Darwin’s meals are prepared and shipped out right away. You’ll receive your meals frozen and packed in dry ice to preserve the freshness. Darwin’s recommends thawing your meals in the fridge in the thawing container the company provides (bonus!) overnight.

What’s on Offer?

Darwin’s has raw, natural pet food for dogs and cats. The formulae are different to better cater to the dietary needs and appetites of each breed. For cats, you have two choices:

  • Natural Selections
  • Intelligent Design

Both are made with 100% pasture-raised, free-roaming (cage-free) real meat and don’t have any junk like antibiotics, preservatives, or fillers. They’re also grain-free and available in chicken, and turkey, and lamb meals. The main difference between the two is that Intelligent Designs is specifically made for cats with kidney disease.problems and diseases. This one needsIntelligent Design requires a veterinary prescription (you can download the form on Darwin’s website).

Darwin’s dog food comes in three varieties, the first two as for cats above, as well as a third one called BioLogics that’s available in chicken, turkey, and beef flavors. It’s basically the budget-friendly Darwin’s special, and includes conventional meats and vegetables.

Food Variety & Quality

What really sets Darwin’s apart from other pet foods is that it’s 100% true raw, and the quality of ingredients (and, from what it seems like, care) that go into this diet. The entire process is saturated with consideration and concern for animal well-being, health, and intelligent planning. But really, it seems like the folks down at Darwin’s are genuinely interested in helping pet parents give their dogs and cats the healthiest years of their life (and more of them, at that). Without waxing poetic, here’s what Darwin’s brings to the bowl:

  • Top-quality & consciously-sourced ingredients

The Darwin’s food plan is an all-natural, raw food diet. The ingredients that go into these meals are all responsibly-sourced and cared for humanely. Darwin’s really goes the extra mile here, going down to the farms themselves to check up on the humane conditions of these animals.

And all the ingredients are real, unprocessed, healthy foods for your pets. Darwin’s uses wild-caught fish oils as a good source of vitamins, including cod liver, menhaden, and sardines (depending on the recipe).

  • Nutritionally-balanced meals

It also seems like Darwin’s has put a lot of thought and effort into creating meals that are good for your pets. The company consulted with pet nutritionists, veterinarians, and other animal health experts to understand the dietary requirements. What’s particularly interesting is that Darwin’s goes so far as to create different formulas for dogs and cats based on their different nutritional needs and, as the company calls it, “ancestral dietary requirements.”

Darwin’s has certain menu options available for allergies too. For example, the lamb meal is beef and carrot-free, good for dogs who can’t handle the heaviness of cow meat.

Darwin’s also puts its money where its mouth is, managing and supporting several charity organizations, including a pet foster and adoption center, a program for service dogs to give back to these dedicated workers, and an open resource library of up-to-date information about animal nutrition and pet food education.

Help & Support

Darwin’s has a small FAQ section on the website. But the real gold comes from the additional resources. Darwin’s has spent a lot of time and money researching all aspects of pet health. The company created a public library for pet parents to learn more about everything and anything to do with pet care. If you have questions, it’s well worth a look-see.

Additionally, you can contact a Darwin’s support agent via phone or email. Or you can use the online contact form. Darwin’s also offers free pet food consultations to answer any questions you may have and help you through transitioning your pet to fresh, healthy food.

What Pet Parents Have to Say About Darwin’s

“My English bulldog was getting skin infections every month needing antibiotics and suffered from seasonal flank alopecia. Since going on Darwin's, her skin has completely cleared up and her seasonal flank alopecia has completely disappeared and she is now at a very healthy weight. We are thrilled with what Darwin's has done for her!” Theodore Pappas – Portland, OR

“Thank you, thank you, thank you! My dogs never really enjoyed their meals before. I would come home from work to find they hadn't even touched their breakfast. They LOVE Darwin. I do mean LOVE. They come running when they hear me getting it ready. They lick their bowls clean. Both have more energy and better breath! Never thought I would ever see them so excited for meal times! You guys are awesome!” Cheri Carlyle Inayet – Norfolk, VA

“My cat wouldn’t even eat his top quality wet food. He would only eat dry food and I was worried about the carb content affecting his teeth and GI. I just put out the raw food for him and he is avoiding his dry food completely and is chowing down on the raw food. He usually doesn’t even like turkey but he completely loves it. I’m so happy I have something for my 6 month old kitten!” - Teresa, Trustpilot

Darwin’s raw, natural pet food is a great option for pet parents looking to give their dogs and cats a longer and healthier lease on life. Nutritionally-balanced and backed by loads of clinical research and veterinary nutritionist input, Darwin’s meals give dogs and cats what their bodies need to thrive, from shinier coats to healthier teeth and beyond. While the brand is a little expensive, offering no dried kibble options for long-term storage, we love that Darwin’s has disease-supporting meals for ailments like cancer and kidney problems.
